The exact origin of the Cosmopolitan cocktail (also shortened as Cosmo) is uncertain; there were similar drinks, going by different names, until the late ‘80s. Its name and popularity were however established in the mid-1980s; the story goes that it was Cheryl Cook, a bartender in Miami, who added to a martini cocktail the characteristic pink hue, to make it visually appealing and more popular with women. The Cosmopolitan was highly celebrated in the 1990s as it became the favourite of Carrie Bradshaw and her “Sex and the City” friends.
